Back pain: how advanced physiotherapy is changing the approach to chronic pain

Chronic back and neck pain is not just a persistent annoyance. In many cases, it affects how you move, work, and live. Over time, pain stops being only a physical symptom and becomes a functional issue: loss of strength, stiffness, insecurity with movement, and a progressive disconnection from your own body.

At Relit.Life we start from a clear idea: to treat chronic pain effectively, it is not enough to relieve pain; restoring function is essential. And for that, conventional physiotherapy, based only on passive techniques, is often insufficient.

This is where advanced physiotherapy, supported by high-precision technology and evidence-based protocols, makes the difference.

The DAVID method: rehabilitation with data, precision, and real progression

At our centre, we use the DAVID method as a core pillar in the treatment of chronic spinal pain.

This method is based on a fundamental principle: the spine must be rehabilitated in a specific, controlled, and measurable way. To achieve this, it combines three key elements:

  • Biomechanically engineered devices to work the deep muscles of the neck and back, avoiding compensations.

  • Objective functional assessment, which makes it possible to know the patient’s true condition precisely from the very first session.

  • Progressive, personalised training, adjusted session by session according to clinical progress.

Each patient follows a structured programme, supervised by professionals, where every load, every range of motion, and every milestone is recorded.

What the evidence shows: functional improvements beyond pain

The benefits of the DAVID method are not based on subjective perceptions, but on real clinical data obtained in care settings.

An analysis carried out in European rehabilitation centres, with more than 400 patients with chronic lumbar or cervical pain, evaluated the results of a 12-week DAVID programme, with two to three sessions per week. The findings are especially relevant for understanding why this approach works.

  1. Significant functional recovery: More than half of patients experienced a clinically relevant functional improvement, measured using standardised scales such as the Oswestry Disability Index and the Neck Disability Index. This translates into something very concrete: moving better in day-to-day life again, with fewer limitations and greater independence.

  2. Less fear of movement: One of the biggest barriers in chronic pain is kinesiophobia, the fear of moving due to concern about worsening the pain. The programme showed a clear reduction in this fear, helping the patient regain confidence in their body and take an active role in their recovery.

  3. Marked increase in trunk muscle strength: Improvement in lumbar isometric strength was one of the most consistent outcomes. This is key, as a strong, stable spine is a spine that is better protected against relapses.

  4. Improved functional mobility: Increases were observed in ranges of motion relevant to everyday movements, such as rotation and lateral flexion, reinforcing the idea of a real functional recovery, not merely pain relief.

  5. Pain decreases, but it is not the only goal: Although the average reduction in pain was moderate, a significant proportion of patients did experience clinically relevant decreases. At Relit, we place great importance on this point: pain often improves as a consequence of restoring function, not the other way around.

Why this approach fits with Relit’s philosophy

At Relit, we understand rehabilitation as an active, mindful, science-based process. The DAVID method fully aligns with the way we work because:

  • It makes it possible to tailor each treatment using objective data.
  • It integrates the patient as an active part of the process.
  • It reduces dependence on passive treatments.
  • It makes it easier to clearly track progress and outcomes.

We do not look for quick fixes or temporary patches. We look for sustainable changes that restore the patient’s ability to move safely and confidently.

Advanced physiotherapy for a complex problem

Chronic back and neck pain requires an approach that matches its complexity. The combination of clinical expertise, advanced technology, and evidence-based protocols makes the DAVID method an especially effective tool within a modern physiotherapy approach.

At Relit, we are committed to this model because we believe that real recovery begins when the patient feels capable again, not only when pain decreases.
